Why Captain Marvel Failed where Wonder Woman Worked | One v One

  • Published: 07 June 2019
  • Brie Larson's Captain Marvel didn't seem to enthrall everyone. It was a functional film, but comparing it to DC's first female led comic-book film of Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel seemed to be pretty forgettable. In today's episode of One Versus One, let's find out what core differences there are between these two female superhero movies, and why Captain Marvel became forgettable while Wonder Woman despite its flaws is memorable. It's Marvel vs DC, Captain Marvel vs Wonder Woman. Here's how not to adapt a movie.

I heard about some trouble with X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Bit interesting to see how that Fox franchise ends Magneto and Xavier and Jean Gray Pheonix and Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique and whatever.

“Malekith the Accuser” was the best villain in any movie in the world by far! I loved that scene where he umm... well that other scene where he... whatever, he’s still the best villain in the world.

It's not that hard to beat God of War so Wonder Woman isn't too strong.

I liked both movies but Wonder Woman will always be #1 to me. Wonder Woman just felt like a genuine superhero story that everyone could enjoy and relate too. But Captain Marvel felt like it was made to address today’s issues rather than tell a good story. But mostly Wonder Woman did an amazing job of showing who Diana is as a hero. But in Captain Marvel we never truly see what she stands for. Both movies are good, but Wonder Woman does a much better job of telling a story that inspires all of us.

Maleketh? He was the leader of the Dark Elves in Thor: The Dark World. You mean RONAN The Accuser don't you? His name is only mentioned about 5 or 6 times in Captain Marvel.

I think both movies are pretty mediocre but Captain Marvel has that usual marvel charm that works better along with a much more satisfying plot that generally flowed well, Wonder Woman started off well and ended terribly...

Captain Marvel depicted Captain Marvel pretty well as very confident and true to what she believes, Wonder Woman showed its heroine to be pretty retarded and childish which, while cute is a disgraceful way to depict Wonder Woman who should’ve been more noble and stern with a hidden happy quality when she needs to be (that’s how the animated movie depicted her).

I watched WW at home and it impacted me just as it would in the theater. Some movies only looks as good on the big screen. WW definitely not one of them. The casting, Music, acting, plot were all in placed.

While I think that your criticism of the film as a whole was valid, I personally think that you missed the point of Captain Marvel's character. Her internal struggle wasn't just that of wanting to "unleash her true power" - it was more that she always felt like she needed to prove herself to be taken seriously. The message of the film was that women don't have to prove themselves to be worthy of being treated equally by adhering to standards set by men - also, it's not like she was unbeatable "even when chained up". It showed her failing pretty ungracefully many times during the film. On the other hand - I have no idea where they're going to go from here. They've resolved her narrative arc without any room for improvement or continuation for the coming films,,, also like you said she's way too OP lmao.

WW was obviously better but your clickbait title sucks. CM brought in 50% more than WW so there is absolutely no way you can say it "failed". Is it so hard for people to put honest titles on videos? "Why I think the Captain Marvel movie was not as good as the Wonder Woman movie."

I forgot wonder woman existed even though I've seen it. That said Captain Marvel was a more memorable movie because of what a trainwreck it was. It's harder to forget the time I wasted watching Captain Marvel.

I honestly think you misread the theme of Captain Marvel. It's specifically about men trying to control Carol, her interests, her work, her emotions. It's about how the patriarchy suppresses women. That's why none of the other (male) characters fit into your narrative, the films central theme is about a exclusively female experience.

Personally I thought the movie was just ok. :^)

I don't mind that the femaleness of the character wasn't that relevant to the plot. If your point is that women can do anything men can do, then her femaleness effectively *should be* irrelevant. Or at least, it's irrelevance is kinda the point.
Both Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel have suffered the burden of being firsts for their respective studios. And the problem with being a first is that everyone wants and expects different things from it. Marvel can bring out the occasional stinker (coughThor2cough) and noone cares because they have 10x as many films that worked well. But the first Marvel female superhero film? Either it's great or it's not. And it's really not fair to make it a category of it's own. It was a Marvel superhero film, and as a Marvel superhero film it did... middling. It was a lot better than Thor 2, Ant-Man and the Wasp or the Incredible Hulk. But it's also not up there with Marvel's best. That a Marvel film did average for a Marvel film is fairly unnoteworthy. Or should be.

P.S. I also don't mind that the character was kind of a douche. Tony Stark and Dr Strange are both douches and it works fine.

                                                                          • irrevenant3

They needed Captain Marvel to be incredibly powerful for Endgame, so she was incredibly powerful here, even if that made for reduced dramatic stakes.

But it did what the creator want it to do and that is to make alot of money and reach more audience then most single cast super hero movie. But yea to me, it was forgettable and totally miscast.

Factually 1 billion in box office sales is difficult to argue with. However, your opinion has value and this perspective is interesting.

The big difference between the two movies is simple, Captain Marvel forgot to build/write a great Story line that would bring people in and support the character before they decided to school us in in the benefits of being a Womanski.
